Howdy! I’m Rob Meikle owner and guide of Rockin’ M Ranch and Fly-Fishing Outfitters. I started my fly-fishing guiding career on the Snake River in Jackson Hole in 1993. I have guided all of the local major trout streams in the area, but have found my niche’ on the smaller rivers, like the Green and the Salt and lower Snake. The Salt is where I prefer to spend most of my time. I can confidently claim that there is not another guide in the area that has guided more days on the Salt River in the last fifteen years than me. I often get asked, “Why the Salt?” My answer: “I don’t go fly fishing to be in large crowds.” The Salt has 6+ full day sections (40+ miles) of which many sections see very little pressure on a daily basis. It is not uncommon to be the only boat on a section, with a busy day being a ½ dozen boats, which still isn’t bad. The different sections of the Salt offer fishing for all skill levels. Beginners will thrive on the wide open easy to cast spring creek type waters and the expert is challenged on the sections with narrow heavily structured willow lined banks and multiple targets to cast at. The primary fish caught on the Salt is the cutthroat trout, although populations of brown trout are as high as 50% in the upper river. The brown trout gives the Salt River the chance, on any given day, of catching the big fish of a lifetime. Other species of resident trout to the Salt are Rainbow, and Brook Trout. We also offer an exciting exclusive jet boat trip on the lower Snake River above Alpine!
Joe Bressler started his guiding career in 1980 in the foot steps of his father Vern Bressler who started guiding fisherman in and around Jackson Hole in the 1950’s. Joe started and operated Bressler outfitters which was one of the countries largest guide services operating in three states. After selling in 2000 Bressler outfitters became Worldcast Anglers. We are very happy to have Joe guiding and sharing his 40 plus years of fly-fishing expertise with the guests of Rockin’ M.
Darin Day has been guiding fly fishing and outfitting big game hunts in Wyoming for the last 20 years. The last 7 years Darin has been specializing on our local Salt River here in Star Valley. As your fishing guide Darin will do his best to show you all that our local Wyoming waters have to offer.
Another unique fishing opportunity that we are excited to offer is a jet boat trip on the lower Snake, Salt, and Greys River. In the same trip we can also fish Palisades Lake or even a combination of the lake and the rivers. We use 18’ Stealth Craft power drifter which has all of the comforts and ease of fishing from a drift boat with the upstream mobility of a jet boat to access these unique waters not easily accessible by typical drift boats. We are permitted through the Targhee National Forest to fish the lower portions of these rivers as they enter Palisades Reservoir.
The fall is an exciting time for Fly Fisherman in our area. Large numbers of Brown Trout make their way from Palisades up the Salt River to spawn in the main river channel and spring creeks of the upper river. The best time to experience the Brown Trout Run is during the month of October. Fly Fisherman will want to throw streamers for best results. Spin fishing also works very well. 16”-25” brown trout are not uncommon at this time of the year.
The Rockin’ M Ranch location on the Salt River enables us to offer a very unique and exclusive full day adventure. Your guide will start your day with a 3-4 hour morning horseback ride originating from the onsite Rockin’ M stables. The afternoon will be spent fly fishing while your guide navigates you and your fishing partner down the Salt River, from a drift boat, casting at Cutthroat, Rainbow, and Brown trout. At the completion of your fishing adventure you will end up back at the Rockin’ M Salt River boat ramp. All equipment and drinks are provided for this horseback/fly fishing adventure. Your guide will give you a fly fishing/horseback riding lesson for those new to the sport. Spin fishing available upon request.
Rockin’ M Fishing trips are “all inclusive”. At no extra charge, your guide will supply all flies, leaders, drinks, shuttles, and use of equipment, including rods. Anglers will be responsible for their own fishing licenses. Guide gratuities gladly excepted when earned.
